A. DESCRIPTION

A simulation is a computer model that mimics the operation of a real or proposed system. Simulation is a commonly-used and practical technique for modeling and analyzing the real operating systems in order to make more effective decisions. Examples of such systems include transportation, supply chain network, job flow, airports, banks, ocean terminals, information systems, emergency response systems. Due to considerable complexity of real systems, many companies feel difficult to investigate the manufacturing and service design and processes without a computer simulation model.

This course is designed to teach students the processes, tools, and techniques for performing effective simulation analyses. In particular, the course focuses on the basic underlying principles of how simulations work, how to collect and analyze input data, how to build basic simulation models using ARENA, how to verify and validate simulation models, and how to interpret (and perform statistical analyses of) simulation output.

B. ORGANIZATION

Weekly class hours are divided into two parts: the topics are presented in the first two hours and practice session is conducted in the last two hours. The topics are presented by the instructor. The students are assumed to study lecture topics before and after the class. In the practice sessions, each student uses a computer to make the practice asked by the instructor. MS Excel and ARENA software are used to conduct the practice sessions. It is intended that quizzes are given bi-weekly beginning from third week. Several homeworks are assigned regarding to the applications. The students are also asked to submit a term project. There is a mid-term exam at seventh week and a comprehensive final exam at the end of the semester.

C. COURSE TOPICS

The course will cover the following topics:

Fundamental simulation concepts.

Building Simulation Models in Computer.

Statistical Analysis of Input.

Statistical Analysis of Output from Terminating Simulations.

Validation and Verification of Models.

D. COURSE OBJECTIVES

Each student should be able:

1. to design simulation models.

2. to design simulation studies.

3. to analyze simulation output.

4. to collect and analyze input data.

5. to incorporate knowledge from other disciplines in simulation studies.

E. TEXT AND REQUIRED SUPPLIES

Required text:Simulation with Arena” (5th Edition) by W. David Kelton, Randall P. Sadowski and Nancy B. Swets, 2010 (McGraw Hill)

Supplies :Discrete-Event Simulation,” (4th Ed) by Banks, Carson, Nelson, and Nicol, 2005 (Prentice Hall)

F. GRADING PLAN

Coursework will be weighted as follows:

Quizzes 10%
Homeworks /Project 25%
Mid-term exam 20%
Final exam 40%
Attendance 5%
TOTAL 35% 60 % 5% 100%

QUIZZES: Quizzes will relate to current and previous topics. A quiz may be given at any time during any class period — immediately after a lecture, at the beginning or end of a class, etc. There will be no make-up quizzes — none even later during the same class period. Quizzes will be given only to those students who are present.

ATTENDANCE:

Attendance will be graded as follows:

No absences 10
One absence 9
Two absences 6
Three absences 3
Four or more absences 0

Absences for which a medical or court excuse is provided (professional letterhead required) will be recorded but not figured in the attendance grade. Likewise, one absence for which advance notice is given by phone or in person will not be figured in the attendance grade. Also, anyone who has more than five week-long, unexcused absences will receive an “F” grade for the course. Keep in mind that this is an occupational course and attendance is important here.

G. CLASSROOM RULES OF CONDUCT

1. No radios or any kind of players are allowed in class.

2. Please keep your cell phones shut down or in silent mode. You are not allowed to use cell phones during class period.

3. Food and beverages are not permitted in the computer lab.

4. Students are expected to follow and focus on the topics being presented by instructor. Unnecessary chat between students is not nice.

H. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

1. First aid kit — located in Gym Hall

2 Emergency medical help – go to the closest office to use a phone and call 5474 to inform medical care unit, or call security 5066. Please don’t forget to tell the building and room number in which medical help is being expected.

3. Campus security — phone 5066

I. YOUR IDEAS, EVALUATIONS, ETC.

In general, your ideas, comments, suggestions, questions, grade challenges, etc. are welcome anytime.
